About the Songs
Each of the songs on the album has a story behind it, and we are glad to share those stories with you. Track 1 - Silver Sands (Folk Version) - (4:36) - This was piece was originally composed as a dance song. We ended up trying an orchestral version, and the group realized that this was a Folk Song in disguise. It has gotten a lot of positive press. Enjoy! Track 2 - Revenuers - (2:15) - This was originally a collaboration. Dr G wrote the music, and another composer wrote the lyrics. Alas, nothing ever came of it. This song is similar to Day of the Mantid’s “Dancing La Mantid” in that the melody was inspired by as opposed to ever integrated with the lyrics. It is a fun, quick song done in a Bluegrass format. Track 3 - Kiss Me Now, I want Your Disease (Folk Version) - (3:01) - This is another song that started life as a dance song. The play between the instruments in the dance version made the group think that this would work well in the double and follow techniques used in folk music. So, Dr G put together a Nashville notation version, gave a bit of a description, and then got six separate pickers to play their favorite instruments. Dr G says that most of the songs it is 90% the musicians and 10% mixing and mastering. The post Covid world means that you very rarely get the musicians all together at once. In this case, the mixing and mastering effort was extensive to get the parts to line up. The results speak for themselves. This is one of our favorites, and we think that you will like it too. Track 4 - Dust through My Fingers - (4:34) - This Country song is one where we gave our Range Shadows the reins. Dr G put together the Nashville notation, and each part added his special touch. It works very nicely as an ensemble piece. Track 5 - Ballad of the Darkside Prince (Orchestral) - (3:04) - This is the first in a series of three. You can heard the slight variations in the picking between the three versions. This one incorporates some of our local high school, band talent. Thank you folks!! The results are like a fine whiskey, smooth and satisfying. Track 6 - Ballad of the Darkside Prince (Studio Version) - (3:04) - This is the most highly mixed and produced album. If this was a whiskey, this would be the house, flagship blend. It was fun to record and produce. We think that this will be one of your favorites. Track 7 - Ballad of the Darkside Prince (Choral) - (3:04) - This is the final version. This one features a bit of banjo and some choral backing. Enjoy! Track 8 - Mosquito Nights - (3:45) - What do you do when the drummer doesn't show up and you are having a jam session? Enjoy mosquito nights. Here is a nice song in Emaj with a prominent mandolin part. (It is possible that Dr G made one of his rare appearances to record the track. Just maybe.) Track 9 - Fire in the Leaves - (5:22) - This one is in Amin at about 90 bpm. The fiddle stands out proud and loud in this song. There is a bit of studio and mixing work to get the percussion to lead and respond. The overall effect is nice. Enjoy! Track 10 - Johnson County Jam - (2:08) - This track is just the Range Shadows having a little jam session. We hope you enjoy this rougher piece. Track 11 - Things Left Behind (Country Version) - (7:34) - This track is purely experimental. Some of you will love it, and some will not. Enjoy!
